ABSTRACT
Work place counseling has become more increasingly important in 21st century as it impacts on productivity a focus for all organizations. Workplace counseling plays a significant role as it helps employees to self-manage themselves through maintenance of a healthy work-life balance. In Kenya, workplace counseling in relief organizations is a concept that has not been fully explored. The general objective of the study is to establish the effect of work place counseling on the employee performance of NGOs in Kenya. The study specifically focused on employee work related stress, work-life balance, career guidance and workplace change adaptability. The study adopted a descriptive research design to explain the interaction between the dependent variables and employee performance in NGOs in Nairobi City County, Kenya. The study was undertaken at relief NGOs operating in Nairobi.The target population was a total of 549 and a sample size of 183 respondents. Primary data was collected using structured questionnaires that covered all the objectives of the study. The questionnaires were dropped and picked later. Questionnaires were used as the main data collection instruments and a pilot study was also conducted to pretest questionnaires for reliability. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis were used to analyze the gathered data and the results were presented on tables, figures, graphs and charts. The data was then analysed using SPSS (Version 23) and the findings then presented through the use of tables and charts. The conclusion of the study was that Work- life balance, was the major determinant of employee performance in NGOs in Nairobi city county followed by Employee workplace change adoptability, Work related stress and finally employee career guidance. This study therefore concluded that NGOs should improve on counseling their employees in matters concerning work as well as personal lives to assist them in enhancing employee productivity, meeting goals and standards and reducing absenteeism. The study recommended that NGOs should cater for its employees’ counseling needs by providing counseling on work related stress, work life balance, change adoptability and career guidance for better performance.
